A recent UNICEF article about the impact of handwashing stations in schools in Cambodia, highlighted the transformative effect that these facilities can have on children’s lives. The article showcased the Capacity Development Partnership Fund (CDPF) initiative, which installed handwashing stations in schools like La Paing 2 Primary School in the remote northeastern province of Ratanakiri. These stations made it easier for students to wash their hands regularly, protecting them from preventable illnesses like diarrhoea.
At Our Goals schools in Lombok, we face similar challenges in ensuring that students have access to adequate hygiene facilities. Many children in the communities we serve may come from homes without proper sanitation, making it even more important that they practice good hygiene habits at school.

By incorporating handwashing stations into our school designs, we aim to create an environment that promotes health and learning. When children have easy access to clean water and soap, they are more likely to wash their hands regularly, reducing the spread of infectious diseases. This, in turn, can lead to better attendance rates and improved academic performance, as children are less likely to miss school due to illness.
An Indonesian study reported in the International Journal of Hygiene and Environmental Health also highlights the importance of handwashing in schools. Every school built by Our Goals has a handwashing station installed and we ensure that our handwashing stations are accessible and well-maintained, so that we can create a more inclusive learning environment where all children feel clean, comfortable and supported.
